Unhealthy by Design

When it comes to our health, we all want the best for ourselves. Beyond literally being a matter of life and death, our health is also a matter of quality of life. To recap, poor health translates to a shorter, less pleasant life. This is something we all want to avoid, barring certain mental illnesses that create self destructive impulses, but I’m getting ahead of myself. The problem with modern health, however, is that society seems to built upon eating poorly nd not getting enough exercise.

That may sound like a hot take, but hear me out. Processed foods have become ubiquitous as a convenience both to the consumer and to the producer. However, these conveniences come at a tremendous secret cost to the consumer like a deal with the devil. Processed foods are made cheaper and longer lasting with added fillers and preservatives like sugar and salt that both make us love them all the more to the point of addiction and detract from their nutritional value.

Then, there’s exercise. Think about this for a second: the “best,” most sought after jobs are desk jobs. Most of the entertainment we engage in takes place stationary in front of a television. We simply sit more and do less nowadays, and that’s by design. After all, we’re a wealthy society, why should we have do all of this back breaking manual labor? And, we shouldn’t. That’s a given. Nobody should have to, but aside from going way too far, it did have the benefit of replacing the struggles of survival that kept us fit in the wild.

So, if you’re having trouble motivating yourself to get fit and healthy, maybe just try buying a new outfit from Saks Fifth Avenue a few sizes smaller for inspiration, because you need all the help you can get.
